Chinese roots

It's been really long since I last clicked on "The Geeky Bits" and wrote here instead of on the other blog... source of all my troubles and superficial joys.

A lack of intellectual things to say? Quite the contrary... You see, I had loads to siphon off my mind but only limited time to do blogging. Again and again I chose attention and meaningless fawning over whatever gratification this blog might gently bestow upon me, waiting, waiting for me to fill it up so that it does not embarrassingly only contain 2 entries.

But I always fail to.

Sigh. Nonetheless, here I am.

Whenever I go to sing KTV with my friends and we indulge in belting out the oldies, I almost never fail to tell Shuyin... They don't write songs like that anymore, do they? The older Chinese lyrics are filled with an ancient beauty woven into the Chinese language that new songs choose to miss, and English songs just can never achieve.

To digress a little, as I often tell my closer friends, I've always thought that Caucasians are the most beautiful race. They have golden, flaxen hair... with eyes of vivid colours and defined features.

We chinese, on the other hand, have plain features with qian pian yi lu de yan jing he tou fa.

But yet, there is a reason why Eurasians born of Caucasian and Chinese descent are often even better looking than plain Caucasians... it is because the Chinese have a delicateness that other races do not seem to have. (except maybe a bit of the Japs and Koreans too)

When we look at Chinese stars like Vivian Hsu and Zhang Zi Yi for example, they exude a fragile nature that Caucasians just don't.

Comparing Angelina Jolie and Vivian, there is just an unexplainable crudeness about the way Jolie looks...

It almost, no offence to Caucasians, seem as if were there different "molding" Gods for different races.

The Caucasian god is bold, vibrant, but yet a tad clumsy with his work. He has thick fingers with ample strength, but he is impatient to see his end result. He pinches, presses, and there: done.

The Chinese God I imagine is female... She has long, tapered fingers where she sits all day long to create her model. She is rather boring, so simple and compact is good. But she is patient, and she's careful.

Both specimens are beautiful, but just different, you get what I mean? Caucasians are just lacking in the gentle aura that the Chinese have.

Even better if you mix both:

Sharp features with a soft elegance

Funnily enough, it is the same for all cultural objects. A flimsy sword compared to a morning star; sedans and carriages; and yes, back to my point... language: Mandarin and English.

:)

Singing old Chinese songs make me sad, because current Chinese songs always have such stupid lyrics. Like "Lao shu ai da mi", for example. Meaningless drivel. But hey, whatever sells, no?

As our youths get more and more angmoh-pai, our KTV songs get simpler and simpler.

Lyrics no longer make people cry; for such things we have to rely on cancerous victims in MTVs. Like Tong Hua.

But that day, Shuyin and Junne jumped up in delight, because after a few days of trying to play 发如雪's MTV, none came up, and that day, it finally did.

While the MTV played, Jay's mumbled words became clear for the first time, and Fang Wen San's talent shone through, doing his best to blister up goosebumps in everyone.

I present to you:

狼牙月 伊人憔悴
A wolf fang moon, my dear one is waned and sallow

I raise a cup and drink in the wind and snow

Who overturned the cupboard of past lives

Provoking the dust to dispute

A predestined formula for words, how many reincarnations?

You’re frowning, crying that a lover cannot be called back

Even if the annals of history has already become dust

My love will not end

Grandeur is like three thousand waters flowing south

Yet I only choose a ladle of love to comprehend

Only long for your butterfly incarnation

Your hair is like snow, beautifully chilling the parting

Who is touched by my incense?

Invite the bright moon to make my memories bright and clear

Love becomes immaculate underneath the moonlight

Your hair is like snow, a mess of flying tears

Who has been made old by my waiting?

The word of mortals are intoxicated, slightly drunken eras

I use my lack of regret to carve out a stone tablet that represents my eternal love for you

(Rap)
Your hair is like snow, beautifully chilling the parting

Who is touched by my incense?

Invite the bright moon to make my memories bright and clear

Love becomes immaculate underneath the moonlight

Your hair is like snow, a mess of flying tears

Who has been made old by my waiting?

The word of mortals are intoxicated, slightly drunken eras

la er la ~
La er la~

There is nothing wicked reflected in the bronze mirror; tie a ponytail

If you act wildly, in this life I will pour a cup of wine and keep you company

It is so beautiful. For those who don't understand Mandarin, please do not judge the song by the English translation. It does not even do 20% justice to how beautiful the song is.

Shuyin says Fang Wen San and Jay Chou makes a perfect match, and I have to agree.

This blog entry shall end abruptly here. :)

interesting take on things... thought id mention that many of my cousins are now the result of a caucasian-eurasian marriage, or an asian-eurasian marriage thus being either 1/4 chinese, 3/4 caucasian or 1/4 caucasian, 3/4 asian.

I think to myself:

hmmm, s/he looks caucasian, but there's something "different" - or s/he looks chinese, but there's something "not quite right"- it's harder to see the "components" now... I love it :)

Love this ever diverse world... that's my two cents.

Hmmm. Normally I am a big fan of your blogging. On several occassions I have had to defend your right to blog or try to explain you point of view. I have come close to fist fighting to defend your name. Now I am ashamed. It seems that your "depth" and innermost feelings are surprisingly shallow and just plain dumb. I have often thought that Asians have been brainwashed into buying the Caucasion standard of beauty as the ultimate and here you have confirmed this. I know that it would be asking far too much of you to see the beauty of all races. Your eyes don't open wide enough to see that-(that is not a comment or put down on your race-just your narrow point of view.) I thought that even though you are short and have some weird disfiguration on your rather round face, you are still a beautiful person. Since I am not either Caucasion or Asian you will not be able to see my beauty which is truly blinding. Sad for you and your limited vision.Wendy/Xiaxue I am disappointed in you.

Why is it that if someone's race is not specifically mentioned they always have to bitch? Just because she didn't say hispanics are beautiful (or any other race outside of caucasian & asian), doesn't mean she thinks they aren't. She was making a specific point about two specific examples. Quit being retarded.

1:52 PM
Blogger Beatloaf said...

Look here Luke. I'll be retarded if I wanna be retarded. I felt like bitchin about race so I did. Does Xiaxue give a damn about my retardedness? Probably not. So, why do you? And what she said was the she felt that Caucasians are the most beautiful race. THE MOST BEAUTIFUL. If that is not being specific and LIMITED then what is? Lighten up. or Darken up. Whatever. My comment was to her NOT to Luke G. So back off bitch!

It takes a balance mix to in turn give u a good result. Hence, not necessary all mixes have a nice result.

As for Chinese Lyrics, i totally agree that thats something you cant really get from English Lyrics. The flow and the sentimental feelings from Chinese songs (the good ones I mean) are too good for English songs to match.

I have yet another example here:

My 2cents
Cheerios,
Glad

I think you are too quick to judge others for ommitting the extra letters from the word 'Japs'. A lot of people do not know it's derogatory.

It's not like the whole world has this big rule or sign saying 'Don't Call the Japanese 'Japs' cause it's an insult.'.

You could be courteous about it and explain nicely that saying 'Jap' is insulting to the Japanese. I'm a Chinese and I never knew being called a 'Chink' was insulting to other Chinese.

Being ignorant of culture and beliefs may not be an excuse for saying things that way, but it's also no excuse to be impolite just because another does not know it.

You people are fucking anal, or what?

Beatloaf, please do not call yourself my "fan" if you are the sort who cannot take opinions. I doubt you will like past entries if you don't like this one.

What's so wrong about thinking caucasians are the best looking? I do think they are, because I like golden hair and coloured eyes - and no other race has that. SO?

There is inner beauty, and superficial beauty. Just because I appreciate superficial beauty doesn't mean I cannot see inner beauty.

No amount of brainwashing by the media can change my opinion on beauty. Once again, liking something MASS APPEAL does not mean someone is brain-washed.

If you don't think I'm beautiful, I don't need you to find some lameass excuse like, "oh she is Chinese and all Chinese are more petite/have small eyes, therefore she is actually beautiful."

No, fuck you, thank you. Go ahead and think I'm ugly. I don't give a shit.

And Chyma?

Interesting. However, you biased your comparison with a careful selection. Although a caucasian beauty, AJ is at an extreme for strong features.

If you wanted to compare delicate- featured beauties--caucasian, asian and mixed--you should have chosen a more "classic" C. beauty such as Catherine Zeta-Jones, Reese Witherspoon, Meg Ryan or Audrey Hepburn.

As for the song, it was beautiful (I don't understand Mandarin [or any language other than English & a little German] so that part was lost to me), but the English itself was very beautiful. Like wonderful poetry. ^_~

Here is one of my favorites; a very beautiful song.

I do agree that Caucasians are beautiful. But being conceited, I still think us Asians are the best.

I think my opinion comes about partly to the fact that in general, Caucasian's 'golden' era of physical beauty lasts from 13-18, whilst us Asians are later bloomers, from 15-25. We do last a longer time, btw. (:

Every race has their own way of seeing beauty. Whether you're black, white, yellow or mixed, some of them are gorgeous, some are not.

Sometimes I think people shouldn't be too sensitive about what people call them. I seriously never knew Chink was used for insulting Chinese people, and Jap was fine. I consulted a Japanese friend of mine, and she din't even know it was supposed to insult her.

So there. We really ought to keep an open-mind on superficial and inenr beauty, as well as insulting terms.

P.S. eg, if someone calls you a pig, be happy. Pigs are actually quite intelligent, despite their sloth-ish movements. (: Just a random fact.

Ta-ta. And as always, Miss Cheng, you made my day. (:

Just some notes for those not in the know...

The butterfly incarnation in the line "Only long for your butterfly incarnation" is in reference to a classic Chinese tale in which a pair of lovers reincarnated as a pair of butterflies after death.

The stone tablet in the line "I use my lack of regret to carve out a stone tablet that represents my eternal love for you" is a tombstone.

i would like to disagree on your point that caucasians are most beautiful. thats because i'm caucasian myself and i feel caucasians lacking in certain things that asians/other people have.

for example, caucasians seem to lack that sensuality that brazilians and other south americans possess and exude. that makes us less hot.

and caucasians tend not to have lovely tan skin that asians do. i know for a fact that i can sit baking in the sun for 2 or 3 hours and at the end of the day, i moult and end up the same colour as before: pasty white.

asians also have lovely almond eyes, and big ones with long lashes(i'm referring to indians and malays here) and they certainly are most of the time, less curvaceous than asians.

so you see, although we do have coloured eyes and fair locks, its not necessarily a good thing all together, unless you have a package.

but i do agree that mixed people are more beautiful in most cases, not all =)

ps. my cousins think that asians are exotic. isn't that a good thing? haha

I mean, the beauty thing is an opinion, not a fact. But you have called to attention the point that there is such great diversity amongst all races. I believe that the attitude, character and culture that each posses does shine through in they're features and their language etc. That is, to speak generally, of course there are some exceptions. Your interpretation of different "Gods" having different attitudes thus creating different races just makes things so much clearer. Wish you would blog here more often...although the other one is good and funny, I really like your insightfulness that you express here. Keep blogging and good luck in the awards!

I just wanted to say, as a caucasian myself, that even within our... well, for want of a better word... "race" we have massive variations in what makes someone beautiful. For example, a red haired irish girl can often look quite beautifully delicate and frail with pale skin, or a Spanish woman can have tanned skin with strong, angular features with dark eyebrows that frame the face in remarkable ways... even within national borders, the difference between a traditional welsh girl and a typical scots girl is quite remarkable. Nice blog, btw... and you say some cool stuff... but its too hard to generalise these things, imo! ^_^ Incidentally, my girlfriend is a beautiful malay woman... but it's not her race that makes her beautiful, but who she is.

yet another beauty from jay's new album

Your tears glistens with weakness admist the pain
The ghostly white curved moon hooks onto the past
The night is too long and has crystallised into frost
Who is in the attic [filled with] cold hopelessness

Rain gently bounces off vermillon window
I have (written) my life story on paper (only to be) blown into a mess by the winds
The faraway dream has become really faint
The wind has dispersed the image of you

Chrysanthemum destroyed A whole floor of pain your smile has become faintly yellow
People are heartbroken when the flower falls My thoughts lay quietly (aside)
The north wind is chaotic the night is still young your shadows can't be cut
Just leaving me lonely doubled (when I stand) by the lake

The flower has already come late, drifting down brillantly
the wilted morals an unbearable fate
(If you are) sad don't cross the river worries* broken into two
In fear that you can't get back on shore and will sway for a lifetime
*this literally means splitting the top and bottom of the word "chou" apart into two words "qiu" and "xin"

Chaotic sounds of horse hoofs (in) whose territory?
My armory shouts out the wear of time
The sky is starting to light up your voice is sighing
A night of disappointment is (said) in such a roundabout way

beautiful. Jay Chou and Lee Hom can write poetry like nobodies business.

As beautiful as English is, nothing beats the gentle metaphors of our language, and the sheer grace of our long history and culture.

Xiaxue if you know enough about different races then you'll know that ANGELINA JOLIE IS NOT WHITE.
Also she's prettier than that asian girl whose picture you compared Jolie with.

Anyway being a girl I don't really concern myself with how other girls look. All I care about is the guys...the fantastic Asian guys...!!

To each his/ her own. There's beauty even where you'd least expect to find it.

hey there. greetings from australia.

you're probably not even gonna read this, but meh.

i enjoy watching your shows n i think you're really entertaining. however, being chinese myself, i was a little disappointed in the way you wrote about asians... beauty does come from ALL races.. growing up in australia, ive always been complimented on my look & asian features (ok, really not showing off or anything)... perhaps looking at asian ppl thru caucasians' eyes, it can be a complete diff story!

i know your bf is white, right? is he with you b/cos u have fake eyelash extensions and bleached hair?! no, im sure he loves you, cos you're you, a beautiful sigaporean chinese girl. =)

hey just want to say that i once read in a beauty book that said asians are actually the most beautiful race with high cheekbones, good skin and nicer hair. note how caucasians usu hav freckles, coarse hair n rare cheekbones? feeling chio alr? haha.

There are both stunningly pretty Caucasian girls and Chinese girls. They're pretty in different ways, but who can compare them when beauty is so subjective?

However, I sort of agree with you on the idea of the two people-sculptors, as a white person who gets to look in the mirror every day (hurray!). XD I've always thought the same thing, that lots of Caucasians have rather crude features. Some white girls have very delicate, elegant features. Others, like me, have features that, while not necessarily unattractive, have the impression of having been hastily molded from plasticine. :|

It's funny to think that there are people who have plastic surgery to give them double eyelids and make their noses thinner, when I'd give anything to have more almond-shaped, further-spaced eyes and a delicate wide little nose. I suppose the grass is always greener on the other side?
